Botox and Xeomin

BOTOX®

Over a million people have been treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic since FDA approval in 2002. Not just models and movie stars, but people from all types of professions. BOTOX® Cosmetic can smooth moderate to severe frown lines between your brows for up to 4 months. Of course, we know that seeing is believing. So take a look at men and women who have had BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments, and see for yourself!

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a muscle relaxing agent derived from Botulinum that reduces wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily paralyzing the muscle. The most common area of treatment is frown lines of the forehead. It may also be used to treat excessive underarm sweating.

How does the treatment work?

Botox® temporarily reduces the contractions of the muscles that cause wrinkles. By relaxing the muscles, the overlying skin becomes smoother. Several tiny Botox® injections are administered directly into the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Your health care provider will determine where those muscles are located.

Is Botox® safe?

Botox® is safe and has very few side effects. Rare side effects include headache, flu symptoms and temporary eyelid droop.

Will there be any downtime?

You may resume normal activities immediately. Vigorous exercise or laying flat may be restricted for a few hours following treatment. Many clients undergo Botox® during their lunch break and return to work after treatment.

What are the benefits of Botox®?

Botox® has no downtime as opposed to other wrinkle reducing methods. Also, following treatment there is little to no pain or discomfort. Results can be seen after only one session.

How long does a Botox® treatment last?

A Botox® treatment lasts only a short period of time and depends on how many areas are being injected and the size of the treated areas.

How does the treatment feel?

The only pain or discomfort is a slight pin-prick sensation from the small needle injecting the Botox®. If necessary, ice or a topical anesthetic may be applied prior to treatment.

How long do results last?

Results of Botox® vary and can last up to four months. Generally, most people can expect three months of improvement. Treatments are offered every few months for maintenance.

Who are candidates for Botox®?

Candidates for Botox® injections are age eighteen to sixty-five and interested in improving the appearance of their face. Many candidates are seeking relief from wrinkles and brow furrows.

Who should avoid Botox®?

Do not use Botox® if you have an infection where the Botox® will be injected, are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox® or are pregnant. Some conditions may increase the chance of infection, so a doctor should be advised of your medical history before receiving Botox®.

What are the alternative treatments?

An alternative treatment to Botox® is skin resurfacing, which includes many types of laser therapies and chemical peels. These procedures can be painful and may have a much longer recovery time than Botox®. Other alternatives include surgery such as a brow lift.

Is additional treatment necessary?

Generally, after three to four months, the Botox® effects will begin to fade and facial features will gradually return to their former state. Maintenance treatments are necessary to keep the effect of Botox® for long periods of time.

What are the limitations of Botox®?

The limitation of Botox® is that it is not a permanent answer to reducing wrinkles. Also, results vary and occasional problems with asymmetry may occur.

Who are treatments provided by?

Treatments can be provided by any authorized healthcare professional.

Instructions before treatment:

Avoid alcoholic beverages and anti-inflammatory medications before treatment. Schedule a Botox® appointment at least two weeks prior to any special events to allow time to heal.

Instructions after treatment:

Treat any mild discomfort with Tylenol, and expect temporary swelling. If desired, an icepack can be applied after treatment. Do not massage the treated areas because it may move the Botox® around and create a different effect. It is generally recommended to remain upright for four hours after injections and avoid aerobic activity for a few hours.

Xeomin®, the Botox® Alternative

We are proud to announce the addition of FDA approved Xeomin ® a new additive-free formulation of Botulinum Toxin Type A, the same active ingredient found in Botox®  and Dysport®. Xeomin® is a great alternative of neuromodulators used for smoothing and reducing the appearance of unwanted wrinkles and facial lines.

The natural support layers in our skin break down at a faster rate as we age. The repeated muscle contractions result in folds, creases, lines and wrinkles that may appear between the eyes, around the eyes, in the forehead and may also cause a lazy droopy eyelid.  Sometimes these result in one looking tired or angry even if it is not the case.  At  LaserMedica, as an elite office and an exclusive agreement with Merz Aesthetics, the makers of Xeomin®,  we are offering special introduction of Xeomin® at a reduced rate through December 31, 2013.

WHAT IS Xeomin®?

Xeomin® is a purified muscle relaxant that smoothes fine lines and wrinkles.  The Xeomin® injectable treatment temporarily blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the overactive muscles that ultimately cause the wrinkles and lines.  As a result of  the relaxation of the muscles, the lines and wrinkles are softened . The treatment is a simple procedure and may typically take less than 30 minutes with minimal discomfort. Patients can return to normal daily activities  immediately after. Full results are typically  visible between 3-7 days after the  injection treatment and may last between 3-6 months. Like Botox® and Dysport®, results can actually improve over time with repeated injections, as the muscle becomes conditioned to being relaxed.

Xeomin™, also known as incobotulinum toxin A, is the newest FDA-approved alternative product to Botox®. Xeomin™ is really quite similar to Botox in many ways. It is a medicine injected into the face to soften wrinkles by relaxing the muscles underneath them.

How is it different?

Patients generally notice the effects in three to five days for Xeomin™ and Botox®. Both products have the possibility of lasting three to four months, although most of LaserMedica™ patients experience the effects for about four months. The main difference between the two products is only related to how they are stored. Xeomin™ does not need to be refrigerated, which can make it easier to ship from the company. Therefore, it is less prone to denaturation and damage than Botox.

Which treatment should I have?

Both products have similar safety profiles. We recommend trying each of the neuromodulators to see which one works best for you. Botox® cosmetic may have a stronger result in some patients while Xeomin™ may be longer-lasting. As with all medications, each of the neuromodulator products need to interact with your own body chemistry to see what is right for you.

Is there anything I need to do before my treatment?

You should keep in mind that the Xeomin™ treatment is a series of tiny injections to the skin. To minimize any chance of bruising it is best to avoid aspirin or aspirin containing products, ibuprofen, motrin, Aleve or any other anti-inflammatories. All of these products make your blood platelets less effective and your skin more prone to bruising.

What can I take for pain before my treatment?

In general, Tylenol or acetaminophen is best to take before or after any cosmetic injections, because it does not affect your chance of bleeding and bruising. If you have taken ibuprofen once during the week prior to your appointment, it should not be a problem because the needles we use for the injections are very fine. However, any amount of anti-inflammatory medication can increase your chance of bruising or similar complications.

What can I expect after my treatment?

Immediately following your Xeomin™ treatment, you may notice some mild redness or very slight swelling. These side effects generally resolve within half an hour. It takes a few days for the Xeomin™ to fully relax the muscle. We encourage patients to use the muscles that have just been injected with the Xeomin™ to help the product start working faster.

What are the potential side effects?

Side effects from receiving Xeomin™, Botox®, are quite unusual. The most common side effect is a small red dot or tiny bruise where the needle was inserted. This is best avoided by not taking any anti-inflammatory medication or blood thinners for one week before your treatment. Headaches and minor soreness can also occur. Tylenol is the best medicine to take for any pain after your treatment.

Is it Safe?

Xeomin™ is an FDA-approved product that has undergone extremely rigorous and extensive testing to show that the product is both safe and effective.

Which product lasts longer?

Xeomin™and Botox® last about the same amount of time, which is about three to four months in most patients. Some patients, however, experience the effects of either for up to six months.
